Kim, The dates for the celebration at SLIII are the 21-29. It is going to be a huge event with fly-overs and many activities . It should be real interesting. They have asked me to talk here on my experiences in SLIII on April 29th, which happens to be the date we were liberated by Patton`s army in 1945. If you go, any pictures would be helpful for my talk here . Marilyn Walton would also be interested in anything you send.
Cheers, TB
I jeszcze dodał:
I just got a message from Marilyn Walton answering some questions
I asked her and I have copied part of her answer telling about the
70th
anniversary of the Great Escape program.
"You might tell your nephew that the 70th anniversary of the Great Escape will take place next weekend at
the old camp with many diplomatic personnel, ambassadors, attaches from
Britain and other places, and many sons and daughters of the 50 who were killed
attending. There will be a formal dinner at a castle there, a fly over the
camp, and a group marching to Posnan in remembrance. Will take them 4 days.
Wreath
laying on the RAF memorial in the camp also. It will all last two
days".That may be of interest to you and I'm sure you can get more of the details there.
Let me know what happens.
Regards TB.
Pierwszy raz uczestniczyłam w rekonstrukcji historycznej z czasów II wojny, a filmy wojenne to moje ulubione. On oczywiście widział pończochy i mundur z mini spódniczką:) Męskie fantazje. On zawsze mnie tak bawi.
On nagadywał się z każdym spotykanym Anglikiem, a ja podziwiałam przystojnych żołnierzy różnych formacji. Zdjęcia robiliśmy oddzielnie. Moje poniżej.
Nawet flaga konfederatów się znalazła.
Czekam na kierowcę.
nawet Rudy zajechał!
Bitwa się zaczyna. Pielęgniarka w pończoszkach czeka na rannych.
Ci przystojniacy jakby wyjęci z epoki.
Rekonstrukcja bitwy radziecko-niemieckiej.
UsuńOn the morning of April 29, 1945, elements of the 14th Armored Division of Patton's 3rd Army attacked the SS troops guarding Stalag VIIA. Prisoners scrambled for safety. Some hugged the ground or crawled into open concrete incinerators. Bullets flew seemingly haphazardly.
Finally, the American task force broke through, and the first tank entered, taking the barbed wire fence with it. The prisoners went wild. They climbed on the tanks in such numbers as to almost smother them. Pandemonium reigned. They were free!
Two days later, General Patton arrived in his jeep, garbed in his usual uniform with four stars on everything including his ivory handled pistols. He was a sight to behold. The prisoners cheered and cheered. The Longest Mission was finally over!
OdpowiedzUsuńTB sent me the photos and the note you sent to him recently. You are so great to do that for him. You know, I’m sure, that his experience in WWII really defines who he is. It’s funny—he was silent about that experience for so long and now it is a very frequent topic. He is speaking (again) at the senior living facility where he lives about his experience. He has done this a number of times after an entire life of being a quiet guy who shunned public attention. The day we spent on the Honor Flight, going to Washington DC and seeing the monuments, was the most important day in his life, as he has said.
The fact that you and Kim took time to go to this celebration and send him pictures means the world to him.
He is currently “itching” to get out and play golf. He will be 94 in another month. We have had a long, cold, terrible winter, so the start of the golf season has been delayed quite a bit. I will continue to play with him often, as I never know when the last time will be.
Your note, and your efforts to connect to him, really brought him joy. Thank you so much.
Bruce
